One of my biggest “guilty pleasures” last year was watching the hit reality TV show, Rockstar: Supernova. Veteran rockers, Tommy Lee (Motley Crue - drums), Jason Newsted (Metallica - bass) and Gilby Clarke (Guns ‘N Roses - guitar) were starting a new band called Supernova (later changed to Rockstar: Supernova, after another band claimed rights to the name). The winner of the show’s competition would become the band’s lead singer. My favorite (Dilana) didn’t win, but the show was a lot of fun and featured some great (and not so great) performances. In the end, Canadian bad boy, Lukas Rossi was chosen to join the band, record the album and go out on tour with Rockstar: Supernova.
A serious accident requiring surgery and a long rehab sidelined Newsted, after he tried to catch a 90-pound bass head that fell from atop his amp, resulting in a torn anterior labrum in his left shoulder and a rotator cuff and bicep tear in his right. Former Black Crowes bassist Johnny Colt filled in on the tour, which came to Grand Prairie’s Nokia Theater. Dave Navarro’s Pannic Channel, Toby Rand’s Juke Kartel, Dilana and Magni also performed.
A very down-to-earth Magni signed autographs for fans before and after the show. Lukas and Toby also signed after the concert. Lukas was surprisingly humble, going out of his way to thank the fans for coming out, while fun-loving Australian Toby was the life of the party. He made one young fan’s night by giving her a bracelet he was wearing. Surprisingly, Dilana went straight to the bus rather than visit with her fans. The elusive Tommy Lee also signed for some adventurous fans that followed the bus to the hotel, before he headed up to his room after learning the bar was already closed.
