Denton Indie - Protesting everything “red state” since ‘98

Coffee, music and more
Denton’s spirit and community received a much-needed addition this month: The Hydrant, a new mom-n-pop coffee shop. Located a block off ye ol’ town square, this independently-run business hosts fine coffee and live music. Unlike those unfriendly corporate giants, these guys will not buck you out, once you see the starry night stars.

Speaking of off-the-square music, singer/songwriters Steven Dulock and Dylan Sauers laid out impressive sets over at Banter this past month. Keep an eye out for their performances around town. Over at Art 6, Julia Pastrana, performed entirely in the dark — an interesting avant-garde theatre piece. This unique production details the life of a circus freak show — which many Dentonites can relate to.

Hailey’s, Rubber Gloves and Dan’s
Hailey’s hosts a heaping dose of hefty rock during November. Indie-pop sensations, The Spinto Band, pounce on the scene with Frightened Rabbit and The Grassfight opening. Hailey’s also provides opportunities for live hip-hop this month. The pride of Kansas City, MO’s Anglo hip-hop community, Mac Lethal, wants to expand your musical horizons with his brand of freestyle rap. Independent L.A.-based rapper, Murs, takes the stage with Kidz in the Hall, Rapper Big Pooh and Isaiah. Fans of Nada Surf should be wickedly stoked. They’re slated to perform this month, with Delta Spirit and Jealous Girlfriends warming up the stage.

Rubber Gloves doesn’t come up shy with the rock this month either. Denton’s acclaimed homegrown pride, Centro-matic share the stage with their lead singer’s other band, South San Gabriel and locals The Baptist Generals. If you only see one local show this month —you should get out more. But, see this show all the same. Fans of Ohio’s Two Cow Garage will want to keep their bloodshot eyes peeled. They roll though town this month, and The Heelers kick things off properly.

If you’ve been trying to catch Snarky Puppy, you have a chance to see ‘em over at Dan’s Silverleaf with Ari Hoenig. Also at Dan’s, look out for good shows by Eleven Hundred Springs, Charlie Parr, Goodman County and The Tejas Brothers.
