Aly Tadros - Things Worth Keeping - Self released
Is it Feist? Is it Sarah McLachlan? Is it yet another good musician in an endless sea of musicians? With Aly Tadros’ new album, the answer may be yes to all three.

Right from the start, Things Worth Keeping feels very familiar. Maybe it’s the staccato string plucking over the bouncy beat. Or the soft, siren-like singing. Whatever it is, the eleven tracks feel comfortable.

Unfortunately, comfortable also equals boring at times. Some songs feel like a Fiest rip-off, as if last year’s hit song “1,2,3,4” was playing in a loop during the recording process. Others feel a little more unique, like the beautiful, dark “Paper Mache.” “Keep Up” also has touches of greatness, thanks to Ben Sollee’s captivating cello work.

Aly’s flowing vocals are equal parts Sarah McLachlan and Linda Perry. They’re smooth, yet bluesy. It’s a nice combination, just not a new one in today’s ocean of folk-pop singers. Overall, it’s a nice solid disc, even if it has been done before. (Jason Janik)

Girl In A Coma - House of Blues, 6/07/09
These San Antonio natives have returned to the touring circuit well prepared with soon-to-be, under-the-radar hits from new album, Trio BC. Mild-mannered punks they are, but they don’t skip on the enthusiasm. Fans eagerly enjoyed every song, from the first to the last. Lead singer and little-Latina-stick-of-dynamite, Nina Diaz, has eyes that show almost as much emotion as her lyrics. This quality makes the live show even more interesting than their CDs. While they played mostly songs from their sophomore release, they cranked out a number of select fan favorites from Both Before I’m Gone. (Shane Epting)
