Denton Indie - Convincing ourselves that we are cooler than Austin since 2006
Another successful Jazz Fest has come and gone. Bravo Combo closed the festival this year with more polka that you could shake a fried cheesecake at. The event is a great chance for locals and tourists to get together for a free good time and to get drunk in public. But there’s more to Jazz Fest than great music, fried food and stumbling around with open containers. If you figure out what it is, please let us know. Seriously, it’s the perfect event before the unforgiving Texas heat beats down on us like a belligerent Irish man at a soccer game. It signals all of your favorite summer shows are just around the corner.

This end of the season is shaping up splendidly with several sick-ass shows, local and national, and Hailey’s has both. If you’ve never seen Warren Jackson Hearne and the Merrie Murdre Gloomadeers, you’d better. Hearne has a mystique about him that dazzles onlookers like a good round of three-card Monty…. The Forecast returns this month to celebrate the release of their newest EP. If you were there last time, you know what to expect…. The Dears take the stage in support of their newest album, Missiles.

At the end of the month, everyone’s favorite moderate monsters of the Denton indie rock scene, Record Hop, play their fiddles for you. A show this big warrants a trip to ye olde thrift shop for some fancy new skinny jeans.

The Von Ehrics return to the scene with a new CD. They’re celebrating at Rubber Gloves with Six Gun Saints properly opening the show…. If you’re in the market for some really, really talented musicians, then set your sights on Orange Tulip Conspiracy. Shaolin Death Squad and The Invisible Czars open things up. Rock indeed…. The next Gutterth Show, Episode XXXV, has some interesting talent lined up with Florene, Hotel Hotel, Salesman, Phantastes and Abacus.
