Cool stuff…
On Green Day’s US summer tour, a roving art gallery will be set up at each venue to display work by a collection of eclectic artists from around the world. Each has been asked to create an original piece inspired by a track on the band’s 21st Century Breakdown album. (Pretentious or cool? You decide.) Also, bassist Mike Dirnt has launched a studio project shoe to benefit the shoe charity, soles4souls. Macbeth Footwear created the “45 RPM” in tandem with Dirnt. The shoe is selling at select Journeys stores and online at www.journeys.com...

In related news, the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in Berkeley, CA has announced the world premiere of American Idiot, an opera that’s based on hit album of the same name and featuring Green Day’s music and lyrics. The show runs from Sept. 4 through Oct. 11. Tickets are available now at berkeleyrep.org…

Stuff you might dig, or not…
There’s a new book out called Precious Metal: The Stories Behind 25 Extreme Metal Masterpieces that’s worth checking out… Judas Priest will be filming their upcoming Aug. 17 show at the Hard Rock Live at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood. It’s for a DVD that will be included in a forthcoming expanded 30th Anniversary edition of their 1980 classic, British Steel. (THIRTY friggin’ years already? Damn!)

Stuff that’s not cool…
Adam “MCA” Yauch of the Beastie Boys was recently diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his left parotid (salivary) gland. Luckily it was caught early, is localized in one area and is considered very treatable. It requires surgery and several weeks of additional treatment. It will not affect Yauch’s vocal chords, but all upcoming concert appearances are canceled to allow time for his surgery and recovery. The release of the band’s forthcoming Hot Sauce Committee Part 1 has also been pushed back. The HB sends well wishes to Yauch for a speedy recovery.

Crimson Glory singer John Patrick McDonald, Jr. (aka Midnight) died on July 8 from what appears to be total liver and kidney failure. He was 47. The HB sends condolences to McDonald’s family.

See you in September.
