Look What the Cat… Created

What started out as paying homage to their influences has now turned into a state-to-state gigging, high-energy business venture that’s quickly establishing them in the resurgence of the sleaze glam rock scene. The band is Dirty Penny.

Thanks to a full-page photo and several paragraph mentions in Spin Magazine’s coverage of Rocklahoma 2007 — and more recently a photo in the December’s issue of Rolling Stone, the band is gaining a heavy steam of positive publicity. Even though Dirty Penny, bandwise, has been around less than a year, the four-man unit has been tightening their 1980’s influenced craft for four years on the west coast. “We were doing this long before there was VH 1’s I Love the 80’s or Rock of Love,” notes guitarist Jonny Pyrnce.

Due to legal and financial reasons, they were forced to abandon their previous moniker, “Antidote,” but the fan-submitted “Dirty Penny” seems a much better fit.

The new name and debut, full-length, self-financed CD were unveiled at the Rocklahoma Music Festival, where word spread quickly. “We were actually waiting at our hotel room for the rush order of CDs, so we could head straight to the festival,” Pyrnce relates. “On our way, one of our fans saw us and flashed her tits. We sold our first CD on some highway in Oklahoma,” he laughs.

Rocklahoma was nothing but positive for the band. “All the stars aligned,” contends drummer Spanky Savage.

Off stage, the four members — vocalist Binge Daniels, bassist Tyno Vincent, Pyrnce and Savage are extremely courteous and grateful for all that has happened in the last year. Their politeness is genuine. “We grew up in a town (Santa Cruz, California) where everyone is nice,” Pyrnce notes.

The members are well aware that the feet that are stepped on while climbing the ladder of success just might be attached to the dirty penny that will be kissed on the way down.
That is, if Dirty Penny descends at all.
