Blood will Spill

“There’s a certain peace of mind knowing that you’re going to be playing in front of thousands of people every day,” God Forbid guitarist Doc Coyle says with a sense of pride. “You have to love what you do. You have to enjoy it, get out there and play and just be happy to be there. And if it’s over tomorrow, at least I was there.”

It’s that love and enjoyment that have helped Doc and his New Jersey band mates – Byron Davis (vocals), John Outcalt (bass) and Corey Pierce (drums) – put out their most defining album, Earthsblood. They’ve also landed spots on two of this year’s biggest tours – the No Fear Energy Music Tour (with Lamb of God) and the Rockstar Mayhem Festival (with Slayer, Marilyn Manson and others). Plus, they’ll be sharing the Jagermeister stage with Trivium and All That Remains.

“We’re in a good position on that tour,” Doc relates, “because the main stage is just all massive bands and then there’s Trivium, All That, and then us. I feel like we’re gonna have the spotlight. We’ll be the one band doing something different.”

Different is right. Doc describes Earthsblood as “diverse.” “Some songs are straight up heavy, and some are really melodic and out there,” he states. To me, half are normal, and the rest explore all of these little musical journeys. I love the idea of every song being different. When I think of Pantera, there’s “Hollow” next to “By Demons Be Driven.” Every song had a different vibe, a different feel. With many bands today, every song is on 10. The tempo’s on 10 and it’s brutal, which is cool, but it’s boring.”

Listen to “The New Clear” and you’ll get the picture. There are clean vocals by Dallas Coyle and a tribal feel before they hit the heavy groove. “We did something no one would ever expect from us,” says Doc. “It wasn’t the type of song you’d scream over. It demanded a different type of vocal approach.”

The crushing “Bat The Angles” is on the other end of the spectrum. “We decided to bring different tunes and dynamics or to change keys and opt for the eight strings,” Don explains. “It gives a whole different vibe and sound. It’s just really dark, which I want to get back into — just dark, heavy evil sounding material.”

While things are looking up for the band, as they were leaving to do a few warm-up shows for the No Fear Tour, Doc’s brother, Dallas Coyle, announced he was leaving the band. “The way he did things was really messed up and put me and the whole band in a bad spot,” says a frustrated Doc. “This tour is too important. So I just have to put all that shit in the back of my head and take care of business. If he’s happier doing something else, then more power to him and I hope he’s successful. I’ve got to focus on making this record successful. I don’t know what that means for the long term as far as a new record. That’s another conversation.”

Don’t worry because ex-Darkest Hour guitarist, Kris Norris, filled in nicely when the No Fear Tour stopped in Dallas. There’s no long-term discussion as to what the band will do to replace Dallas Coyle but they have a busy year ahead.
