So what’s up in Deep Ellum? Well, apparently not much good. According to Tom from Tom Cats, the City of Dallas is now requiring an SUP (Special Use Permit) from clubs, which has to be approved and (if so), then renewed every two years. It’s more involved than what we can explain here, but Tom has hired an attorney to “Fight City Hall.” And it’s not just his club. We’ve stated in the past that the City Council wants the Deep Ellum area to consist of high-rise condos, lofts and expensive restaurants and stores. Looks like they’re starting to make that happen, with no regard to established clubs and businesses, that have put their heart and soul into Deep Ellum - along with area music fans. Lots of band changes After many years, Tornado Alley has called it quits, playing their last gig at Stumpy’s on Nov. 3. They put on a kick-ass show for the final one. They’ll be missed…. Diver Down is also no more. They broke up about a month or so ago. Live Wire (Motley Crue Tribute band) is scheduled to play their last show on New Year’s Eve at O’Rileys. They’ve recently been playing “musical musicians” with vocalists, having Spicoli (formerly with 93.3 the Bone) fill in a few times, before Stacie Stokes took over the spot. Guitarist Jim Wright reports that he’s now part of a new band, The Avalon Project, which will be “covering 80’s classics in a whole new way along with some originals.” Other members will be Stacie (vocals), Rebacca Dieter (vocals - Jim’s stepdaughter), Tommy, (drums), Christian Johns (drums) Richard Gish (bass) and John Conley (guitar). Members are mostly from Live Wire, Zativah Kid, Rugburn, and Gibson Cemetery). They’ll also make an appearance at O’Riley’s on New Year’s Eve.
