Benefits
The 2nd Beard-A-Fit Benefit is at Club Dada on Sunday, Sept. 7, from 3 PM to 12 AM. It’s to raise money towards Beard’s medical bills of $51,000. He’s has been a popular 21-year “fixture” at Dada. The 15 bands performing include Naked Lunch, Queen For A Day, Cas Haley and D.J.Hector.
HB (and DMN) photographer, Jason Janik’s photo exhibition continues through Sept. 6 at the Kettle Art Gallery. It benefits the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

A memorial concert held at the Lone Star for Hit and Run bassist, Ben Cooksey, was a big success with an afternoon and evening full of good music, Bands playing were Deep South Union, Hammerlock, Doomsday Junky, Iklahomos, West wall, Hit & Run, Tiger Moth and Honky. Several thousand dollars was raised.

Near Miss
On August 1, Criminal Sanity’s vocalist, Larry Lynch and his wife Lori headed off to Sturgis, SD, for the annual motorcycle festivities. They didn’t make it far though before they had a motorcycle accident, when someone suddenly stopped in front of them. Luckily they were not badly hurt, though the bike was a total loss.

The Black Sheep have a new drummer, Ray Duke. They hated to part ways with Dave Hale, but he lived far away and commuting had become expensive.... Look for Van Halen Tribute band, Fan Halen, who opened recently for Back In Black at the House of Blues... PHANTOM-X has a new lineup: Kevin Goocher (vocals) and Glenn Malicki (bass) have been joined by Richard Tull (guitar) and Steve Nichols (drums). The band heads into the studio next month to work on their third CD, This is War.

From Marissa
Texas Tributes - Sad Wings (Judas Priest Tribute) hails from Austin and features Jason McMaster on vox. Catch ‘em at the Rockstar on Sept. 26. Yes, there really is a Slayer tribute band in Dallas, and they kick ass! Ernie Jaramillo of Cunthammer heads up this project as singer/bassist.

Guitarist Alapeno’s got yet another new project, Belief System. Rope Head joins him on vocals. The tracks I’ve heard rip are brutal - and, with D. Braxton Henry mixing, you can expect great things!

Dallas locals The Destro have pretty much been on tour all summer - first on Metal Blade’s Fresh Meat Tour, then at Ozzfest and next in Sept. with Bleed the Sky. They’ll be hitting up eight states, completing the tour at the Indianapolis Metal Fest. Way to persevere – rawr!

Over Labor Day several Dallas bands (and yours truly along with other HB-ers, Andy Laudano and Randy Garza) made their way to Houston’s Rock The Bayou for four grueling days of rock! Staggercrawl, Little Green Men, Revengeance and Verdict of Vengeance took the opportunity to play alongside legends like Alice Cooper, Yngwie Malmsteen, Ratt and Twisted Sister during this hotter-than-hell music fest. Look for a review in next month’s issue. (Marissa Bruce)
