Just an observation…
Apparently Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” was deemed too racy by Olympic organizers. After choosing the song for the closing ceremony with Jimmy Page wailing and a popular Chinese woman (playing Robert Plant), they decided some lyrics should be omitted or re-written amid concerns that they could cause offense. The song was the centerpiece of an eight-minute British segment as the Olympic flag was officially passed to London Mayor Boris Johnson — host of the next installment of the summer games. In the original, recorded in ‘69, Robert Plant sings “I’m gonna give you every inch of my love.” Lyrics sung on Aug. 24 were changed to “every bit of my love.” However, as our editor Linda Hollar pointed out, “Besides changing those lyrics, they totally left out “I wanna be your backdoor man.” Hmmm. Wonder why.

Excuse us while we get on our
soapbox...
We’ve recently heard the reason labels are only allowing certain store chains to sell albums by their biggest bands is that these chains are guaranteeing huge sales. While that may be the case with the latest albums from The Eagles, Journey and the impending new AC/DC record, one has to wonder how this is going to affect the rest of the industry. Is it any wonder why the huge labels are so hated anymore? Are these chains paying labels huge amounts to carry a title exclusively? Who knows?
An eye-opening documentary recently aired on cable exposing Wal-Mart’s “questionable” labor practices – not only in the US, but what they pay their employees in other, less-developed countries, which can only be construed as slave labor – not to mention the abhorrent conditions they’re forced to work in. Maybe if these labels and/or bands did a little research before signing these deals and reaping obscene rewards, they’d see that they’re helping contribute to these practices. [The company’s health insurance coverage for U.S. employees is abysmal too.]
With that, we will close by saying Happy Football Season!
