Rest In Peace…
On Sunday, May 18, Michelle Meldrum (leader of the band Meldrum and former Phantom Blue guitarist), was rushed to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Burbank, California in critical condition. Three days later, she passed away as a result of a cystic growth on her brain that had restricted oxygen and blood flow to her brain, rendering her brain dead. Michelle had just completed writing and recording Meldrum’s soon-to-be-released third album. The surviving band members plan to release the CD later this year in tribute to their fallen band mate. Meldrum, 39, is survived by her parents and three-year-old son, Jake Thomas (whose father is Europe guitarist John Norum.) For those who didn’t know, Phantom Blue was the best all-female band that ever lived. Do yourself a favor and find a copy of their Built To Perform album from 1993. Absolutely astonishing.

Well wishes, Steven…
Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler checked himself into a rehab facility (no, not that kind of rehab!) earlier this month after a series of surgeries and post-operative physical therapy (to correct long-time foot injuries resulting from his trademark athletic performance onstage). “The doctors told me the pain in my feet could be corrected, but it would require a few surgeries over time,” 60-year-old Tyler said. “The ‘foot repair’ pain was intense, greater than I’d anticipated. The months of rehabilitative care and the painful strain of physical therapy were traumatic. I really needed a safe environment to recuperate where I could shut off my phone and get back on my feet. Make no mistake; Aerosmith has no plans to stop rocking. There’s a new album to record, then another tour.”

LIT drummer Allen Shellenberger

On a more serious note
Lit’s 38-year old drummer, Allen Shellenberger, has been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor — the same type as Senator Edward M. Kenney is battling. The band has cancelled their European tour dates with Kiss. Biopsy results identified Shellenberger’s cancer as malignant glioma, which affects approximately 10,000 Americans per year. Allen is pursuing radiation and chemotherapy treatments.
Lit has been together over 20 years, and has continued to write, record and tour. We wish Shellenberger well in his fight.

Releases and new business ventures…
Hatebreed tapped the legendary Vinnie Paul (Pantera, Hellyeah) to produce, document and record Hatebreed live during their recent show at the Palladium Ballroom in Dallas, May 27.…

Are you kidding?
Producer extraordinaire Nick Raskulinecz (Death Angel, Trivium, Marilyn Manson, Danzig) has started a new shoe company called Hooves Footwear that has partnered with Gravis Footwear to design to create a premium, limited edition, core metal shoe. Hooves’ first signature shoe, The Beast, is limited edition and will be released on June 1. The goal of Hooves Footwear is to supply bands and other metalheads with a new shoe that fits the lifestyle, and to promote the metal scene and metal music as a whole.

More bands should do this…
