Hellyeah, Nonpoint, Bury Your Dead - Ridglea Theater, 3/3/08
As vocalist Chad Gray put it, Hellyeah wanted to end their first tour right where it started, in D/FW, and they did it in high fashion. Over 1,100 manic fans jammed the Ridglea to its gills, with an energy that could barely be contained. The More Balls, Volume and Strength Tour kicked off with Bury Your Dead delivering a head-bashing set.
Florida’s Nonpoint came next, and the crowd really came alive. Front man Elias Sorian used his powerful voice and commanding stage presence to keep the crowd on their feet and fully abuzz.
The building was shaking with anticipation as Vinnie Paul climbed behind the kit and raised his hands to the sky. Hellyeah hit the stage in a fury, and rarely let up off the pedal as they tore through every song on their debut record. Highlights included “Rotten To The Core,” “You Wouldn’t Know,” “Waging War,” a great sing-along of “Alcohaulin’ Ass” and a surprise cover of “Stone Cold Crazy” (aptly re-named “Stone Cold Wasted”).
The moment of the night, though, was a heartfelt performance of “Thank You,” which had every lighter lit and everyone singing along. After the song, the crowd erupted in a long, powerful chant of “DIMEBAG! DIMEBAG! DIMEBAG!” Gray said afterward the band has felt like they’ve had an angel watching over them throughout their time together, and he knew in his heart Dime was there with us. Vinnie took the mic and thanked his hometown crowd for all their support and thanked his band mates for helping get him back up on the stage. Though this was the last night of the tour, the band promised another record is in the works and another tour will follow. Peace. (Kevin White)

Staggercrawl - O’Riley’s, 2/09/08
The best way to describe Staggercrawl is pure raw power with a non-stop stage show. The band features Eric Pfeifer (lead vocals), Marcus Trimmier (lead guitar and vocals), Mark Trimmier (guitar and vocals), Mark Hand (bass and vocals) and Terry Sims (drums). Playing pulse pounding originals like “Sinner,” “Deranged,” “Double Dealing” and “Land of the Free,” they proved that original music is still alive in well in the DFW music scene and that they’re not afraid to show it off.
They preformed before a large crowd of fans, most of whom were at the front of the stage the entire show singing along with every song, Staggercrawl put on a show that will not soon be forgotten. Check them out next time they are at a club near you. The talent in the band is sure to impress you. (Kim Polen)

Queensryche/Don Dokken - The Palladium, 2/16/08
With the rest of his band hard at work on their next album, Lightning Strikes Again, a solo Don Dokken opened with a rare acoustic performance. Kelly Keeling (TSO), who sang backing vocals and played acoustic guitar, joined Don. Highlights included “Into the Fire,” “Dream Warriors” and “Alone Again.” This was something REALLY special that no Dokken fan should’ve missed.
After spending the last few years doing the big Operation: Mindcrime shows with all the actors, theatrics and elaborate stage set ups, a stripped-down Queensryche went back to basics. Digging deep into their rich catalog, the band played songs they haven’t done in years. There were enough big hits to keep casual fans happy but, for longtime fans, “The Killing Words,” “Anybody Listening,” “Gonna Get Close to You,” “Real World,” “Last Time In Paris” and personal favorite “Another Rainy Night (Without You)” were the real gems. A fantastic show from top to bottom. (Andy Laudano)

Adrian and the Sickness- - 1/5/08, O’Riley’s
Anyone who says girls can’t rock has never seen Austin’s Adrian and the Sickness, a trio of high-octane punk/rock power with a little rockabilly thrown in for good measure. The band features Adrian Conner (vocals, guitar), Heather Webb (bass) and Melodie Zapata (drums). Conner and Zapata are also in the Seattle-based, world famous, all female AC/DC tribute band “Hells Belles.”
Playing to a full house, they performed originals like “Loser,” “You’re Fired” and ‘Sex.” There were killer-shredding, back-spinning guitar solo’s with Conner’s dreadlocks flying all the while. Other songs included covers of Ozzy’s “Bark at the Moon” and Concrete Blonde’s “Bloodletting.” Adrian and the Sickness’ unbridled power and sense of humor on stage should not to be missed. (Kim Polen)

Ghoultown - Reno’s Chop Shop, 2/23/08
Headlining the Texas Frightmare, Ghoultown shook the walls of Reno’s with their Ghoulish rock. Lead singer Count Lyle really put on an animated show, which included standing on top of a skull box high above the crowd and wailing on his guitar. He held out the mic to Skot Snot (lead guitarist, Triple Six Shooters), who sang along with the band. Count Lyle is one of the area’s best vocalists, and Ghoultown knows how to put on one evil show. (Scott Mankoff)

Kid Rock - Bossier City, LA - 2/19/08
Kid Rock is not only a great musician, but he’s also a true entertainer. His concert at Century Tel Center in Bossier City was non-stop entertainment for over three hours, with a very short intermission. Instead of the usual opening acts, his guest performers, Dickie Betts of the Allman Brothers, and Rev. Run of Run DMC, interspersed their performances with Kid’s throughout the show. (Jill Jackson)

Super Furry Animals - The Granada Theater, 2/01/08
Super Furry Animals (SFA) is a world-renowned band from Wales, which used to sing only in Welsh. They only come through Dallas once every three years or so and - just like a comet shining through the sky - SFA shined during their gig at the Granada. It was a one-of-a-kind show that began with vocalist Gruff Rhys wearing a giant Power Ranger Racing Helmet and singing into two microphones about a foot apart on a stand, holding them like a giant steering wheel. He drove through the audience on a hovercraft of sound - which is the point, if you know SFA. They’re scheduled to headline the UK’s Green Man Festival on Aug. 16. (Scotty Mankoff)

Dr. Shames Love Circus - O’Riley’s, 2/09/08
Dr. Shames Love Circus takes you a trip of rock and roll history. They performed songs like “Ring of Fire”(Johnny Cash), “No Sugar Tonight” (The Guess Who), “Ice Cream Man” (Van Halen) and “Fight for your Right (to Party)” (Beastie Boys) - all to perfection, with something for everyone to enjoy. Band members are Jay Burington (guitar), Robert Fortier (AKA: Dr. Shame -vocals) and twins Kenny Casey (bass) and Kelly Casey (drums). The band’s performance was tight and their stage show was full of energy. They truly had a good time on stage, and the fans loved the trip down memory lane. A must see for all rock and roll fans. Ace Frehley

Ace Frehley, The Trews, Dixie Witch - House Of Blues, 2/24/08

Erstwhile Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley celebrated his return to the stage in front of an excited near-capacity crowd clad largely in Kiss paraphernalia. Austin’s Dixie Witch started the party off, with a heavy, groove-based set that seemed to sit well with the crowd.

Coming off as a more polished, modern Black Crowes, Canada’s The Trews sported an infectious sound. Hints of classics like CCR and Free meshed feverishly with Queens Of The Stone Age or Velvet Revolver. In short, we’re talking punch-to-the-mouth rock and roll. Though fans were lukewarm at first, by the end of The Trews’ set, they were begging for more.

The crowd was at fever pitch as Ace Frehley and his new band burst onto the stage amidst a sea of green lasers and a colorful light show. They tore through opener, “Rip It Out,” as everyone dutifully sang along. His young band, featuring guitarist Derrek Hawkins, bassist/vocalist Anthony Esposito and drummer/vocalist Scot Coogan, looked great in their matching ‘Ace’-style jumpsuits. Their energy and stage presence clearly gave Ace a boost as well, as they jammed classics from both the Kiss catalog and his own solo works.

Ace looked like he was having fun, ripping off songs hits like “Shock Me,” “Rock Soldiers,” “Breakout,” “New York Groove” and rarely-heard gems like “Hard Times,” “Stranger In A Strange Land” and “Strange Ways.” He even mixed in a medley that started off with “Torpedo Girl,” a song I never thought I would hear live. Of course, he closed the show with “Cold Gin,” the outro from “Black Diamond” and the song he auditioned for Kiss on, “Deuce.”

Expect a new studio record from Ace this spring, with another summer tour to follow. If you missed this one, it would be wise not to do it again! (Kevin White)
