“The tour has been real fun. We’re looking forward to the gig tonight,” affirms God Forbid guitarist Doc Coyle (shortly before their show at the Ridglea Theater in Fort Worth). They’re co-headlining the “In Thrash We Trust Tour” with thrash titans Death Angel. Doc comments on the fans gathered in the parking lot and others heading into the venue. “It looks like the metal heads are coming out tonight. Texas seems to be picking up a lot and, the further south we get, things really seem to get better.”

God Forbid consists of Doc, his older brother, Dallas Coyle (guitars/vocals), Byron Davis (vocals), John “Beeker” Outcalt (bass) and Corey Pierce (drums). This year is shaping up to be a big one for the band, as they’ll be releasing their first ever DVD on June 10. “We definitely wanted to play some shows around the DVD release to hype that up and let people know it was out,” says Doc.

The two-disc DVD, Beneath the Scars Of Glory And Progression, contains over three hours of concert footage, videos and a documentary. “We filmed a concert in our home area (New Jersey) at this club called the Starland Ballroom,” explains Doc. “It was on our last headlining tour about a year ago. The show was huge, the crowd was incredible and the way it was filmed was amazing. On the second disc, there’s an hour-and-a-half documentary talking about the history of the band, the quirks and personalities of who we are,” he states. “We’re trying to give the people who don’t know us a bit of a hint of who we are. A little more than just what they see of us on stage.”

Prior to hitting the road, God Forbid was working on their new CD, hoping to have it ready — but they ran out of time in the studio before tracking the vocals. “We really didn’t do a pre-production for the vocals, and the new stuff is so different,” Doc notes. “Now that Dallas sings — and I’m doing some singing as well — that’s one of the things we have to work on. We still have to do a little more work on the vocals and make sure everything’s all right. We can’t just apply the same formula of what we were doing. We can’t say, ‘All right, Bryon, just scream on this.’ These songs have a lot more finesse. He (Byron) has developed this kind of mid-range voice where it’s heavy and he’s yelling almost like Slayer. We’re trying to mix that with what we’re already doing.”

Not only have the vocals evolved, but the music is also making a progression. “It took us a while to figure out where we wanted to go with this album, Doc explains. “We’re kind of one of those bands who get bored doing the same thing. We try to recreate a sound or something we were doing on a previous record, but it just never seems to work out. “We have to score new ground and do different things.

To give more insight into what fans can expect of the new record, Doc describes it as “a totally different record from the last one. It’s more progressive, and it kind of pushes that epic vibe and is less break-down driven.” As for the guitars, he states that he and his brother are totally playing off each other. “Dallas is playing a few more lead lines and stuff. He comes up with a lot of these really cool melodies. It’s not like shredding stuff but more ear candy.”

Once the tour concludes, the band will re-enter the studio to put the finishing touches on the new offering. “Right now I have to focus on making this record as good as it can be,” comments Doc. “It’s time for a new record from us. It’s been way too long. In this short attention span sort of society we live in now, you’ve got to have some new stuff, some fresh stuff. We ran out of time in the studio, so we still have to finish recording the album.”

Do yourself a favor and pick up God Forbid’s DVD on June 10. You’ll get great insight into the roots of the metal band that’ll be kicking everyone’s ass with new material later this year.
